The release of ‘Love Story’ has re-ignited massive interest in America’s son, John F. Kennedy Jr., and his beautiful wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. On July 16, 1999, the couple, accompanied by Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette, died when their Piper Saratoga light plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. JFK Jr. was piloting the plane, which likely crashed due to spatial disorientation in hazy, nighttime conditions. The accident was an inconceivable tragedy in a family plagued by so many horrific deaths. In 1944, John F. Kennedy’s eldest brother, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr, was killed in a plane explosion in World War II. In 1948, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy died in a plane crash. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. In 1968, Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated after winning presidential primaries.

The controversial FX/Hulu ‘Love Story’ series has significantly ignited Gen Z’s interest in Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s style, turning her into a cool girl obsession and a definitive “patron saint of quiet luxury” style icon in 2026. There’s been a wave of social media content wherein TikTok and Instagram meticulously recreate her 90s minimalism. It’s called “Quiet Luxury” and it has moved Gen Z away from branded, fast-fashion maximalism toward Bessette-Kennedy’s aesthetic, which is defined by “educated tailoring”, clean lines and neutral colors. It’s a pre-internet nostalgia, before the age of social media.

Ironically, it is now TikTok and Instagram flooding the Gen Zs with tutorials on how to achieve Bessette-Kennedy’s look, specifically her Calvin Klein slip dresses (she was a former Calvin Klein publicist), crisp white shirts and headbands. It’s been named the “CBK-inspired” aesthetic, and it appeals massively to a younger generation looking for understated, effortless style. The famously very private Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy has become the fashion muse for the next generation who greatly admire her tasteful quiet luxury.
