Short Stories About Big People

Boy, this pandemic has really had an effect on all of us. Some folks get depressed, some get angry, and then there are those who use the time reflecting on life in a productive way.

I have a friend whose life has taken so many turns – some good and some bad. She was raised in Zimbabwe during a tumultuous war, a troubled environment, and yet she learned to cope. My friend has written a book entitled Sunrise and Roots. It’s a phenomenal story that takes you down so many roads, and yet shows you how people can survive and be successful even in the hardest of times. Oh, by the way – my friend is Di Lyle, the publisher of this wonderful magazine. Thank God she didn’t give up. I highly recommend this book.

Here’s a story that blew me away. One day a young Thomas Edison came home from school with a letter from his teacher. He handed it to his mother who read it to him with tears in her eyes. “Your son is a genius and this school is too small for him. We do not have the teachers he deserves. We suggest you teach him at home.”

Many years later after his mother had passed away, Edison found the letter. The letter said, “Your son is mentally deficient. Please don’t send him back to this school.” What a tribute to his mother, turning a ‘mentally deficient’ child into one of the greatest inventors of the 20th century. I guess encouragement and a positive attitude can change anyone’s destiny.

I was reading about the wealth of some ‘big people’ and was amazed. For instance, Jeff Bezos owns 12% of Amazon which is worth over $109 billion. Sometimes a little bit is a big bit!
