San Ysidro Ranch

We recently spent a superlative weekend at San Ysidro Ranch, a breathtaking southern Californian paradise just 90 miles north of Los Angeles – set on 550 acres with a bird’s eye view of the Pacific Ocean. The magnificent gardens are always in bloom, showcasing stately sycamores, gnarled oaks, a fragrant lemon pergola and fields of lavendar scents complemented by rosemary and jasmine. It feels worlds away but is an easy one-hour drive in proximity.

From the moment we were received by courteous staff on the property, we began to fully appreciate why it has been awarded ‘Icon Status’ by Travel + Leisure 2025 World’s Best Awards. They named San Ysidro Ranch the #2 Best Resort in California and the #3 Best Resort in the Continental United States. Worldwide, it rates as a top 100 Resort. It has also been recognized as one of the best hotels and resorts in the world by Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Gold List. The Hollywood Reporter’s Travel Awards named it one of the best hotels in Southern California, and it was also named the World’s Best Romantic Hotel, America’s Best Romantic Hotel, and America’s Best Honeymoon Hotel in the 2024 Boutique Hotel Awards.

Private Hideaway Cottages with Luxurious Amenities

We stayed in one of San Ysidro Ranch’s 38 elegantly and uniquely decorated vine-covered cottages nestled within meticulously landscaped gardens. The design of each charming cottage ensures ultimate privacy with your own private entry gate into your own fully enclosed garden. There’s both a front and back patio area, indoor fireplaces, oversized soaking spas, and indoor/outdoor showers. The king-size four poster canopy bed with luxurious Italian linens was a dream in which to sleep. During our immersion into the superlative standards at San Ysidro Ranch, we were ensconced in the resort’s attention to every thoughtful detail. We were greeted by our names carved in wood outside our cottage’s front door, and upon entry, a beautiful bottle of champagne welcomed us with a hand-written note. At our window seat, there were home-made lemon confectionaries baked from the freshly harvested lemon orchard on the resort. Our car had its own private parking spot right outside our front door and there were electric vehicle chargers beside every cottage.

We savored the idyllic Southern Californian weather by spending the afternoon at the resort’s picturesque swimming pool overlooking spectacular mountain scenery. After a refreshing swim, we enjoyed our first appreciation of the world-class menu and exacting standards at San Ysidro Ranch. We feasted on two light delicacies: the yellowtail sashimi and the resort’s signature crabcakes, which were delicious. For keen hikers, there’s a picturesque 17-mile hiking trail beyond the swimming pool.

Award-Winning Dining, Complimentary with Every Stay

In the evening, we reveled in the romantic setting of The Stonehouse Restaurant. We sat at the outdoor terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean and as nightfall fell, the twinkling lights melded perfectly with the navy-blue sky. You can also choose The Veranda, which offers a quaint, intimate dining experience with a table by the stone fireplace, beneath the stars and twinkling lights. No matter the setting, each meal is elevated by fresh herbs and vegetables harvested daily from the onsite chef’s garden. For those seeking privacy, meals can always be enjoyed in the comfort of your own cottage.

The award-winning, nationally acclaimed culinary experience includes breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner in the nightly rate. You can choose decadent items such as indulgent caviar, seafood towers, and melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu.

We ordered the Dover Sole and loved its delicate flavor complemented by the to-die-for sauce. A particular highlight was having a world-class expert advise us on the taste-bud sensation of pairing Ports from around the most famous parts of the world with the delicate cheese choices that The Stonehouse offers. It was pure luxury completing our dinner with the subtleties of the blends, and the recognition of what a rare and refined treat we were experiencing.

Since 2014, The Stonehouse Restaurant has proudly held Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, the publication’s highest honor, recognizing an extraordinary commitment to a world-class dining experience. Only five restaurants in California have achieved this prestigious accolade. The Stonehouse has also earned Michelin recognition for its dedication to locally sourced ingredients and premium global imports, ensuring a menu of refined and seasonal flavors.

A Legacy Wine Collection Featuring Château d’Yquem & Pétrus is tucked beneath The Stonehouse in a temperature-controlled wine cellar which holds an extraordinary 15,500-bottle collection, featuring 3,500 individual labels from 70 of the world’s most renowned wine regions. This meticulously curated selection represents a deep commitment to rare and extraordinary vintages, offering an unparalleled experience for wine enthusiasts and collectors alike. At its heart lies one of the most coveted verticals in existence—a 120-bottle complete vertical of Château Pétrus, featuring every vintage from 1945 through 2017. Further elevating the collection’s prestige is the recent acquisition of a 138-vintage collection of Château d’Yquem, the most revered sweet wine in the world—including the exceptionally rare 1811 ‘Comet’ vintage, celebrated as one of the finest wines ever produced. Additionally, led by a team of esteemed experts, the Ty Warner Wine Collective invites guests to discover the intricacies of winemaking in Central California and beyond through exclusive wine tasting experiences. One-of-a-kind programming is completely tailored to each guest’s unique palate and preferences and includes personalized consultations, curated tasting classes with some of the world’s rarest bottlings, and guided excursions to nearby invite-only wineries.

The Speakeasy

We capped off the night at the 1920s-inspired Speakeasy where you can indulge in an extensive menu of expertly crafted drinks and divine food items. We enjoyed an inspired mocktail made by our expert mixologist. Paired with the vibrant sounds of live music, The Speakeasy is a celebration of elevated flavors, live entertainment, and clandestine charm.

A Historic Retreat for Hollywood Legends and Icons

For over 130 years, San Ysidro Ranch has been a sanctuary for A-list celebrities and historical figures, offering unparalleled privacy and seclusion. A true Hollywood hideaway, its guest list reads like a chapter of history, including Groucho Marx, Winston Churchill, and John & Jackie Kennedy, who chose it as their honeymoon retreat, while Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier exchanged vows here, further cementing its legacy as one of the world’s most iconic hotels.

We spent a star-studded magnificently comfortable night in the seclusion of our cottage at this special haven. It was so quiet and peaceful that we slept in until 9 am the next morning – a feat and a necessary reprieve from the pressure and noise of big city life.

San Ysidro Ranch offers an experience so special that you will come away revitalized, rejuvenated and a true believer in why hospitality and service of this exceptional caliber has such vital restorative power.
