Julia Roberts, one of Hollywood’s most loved and respected actresses, has lived an unpretentious life away from Hollywood – raising her three children with husband of 23 years, Danny Moder. She and Danny first met on the set of the 2001 film, The Mexican, and married at her 82-acre New Mexico ranch in 2002.
In November 2004, Julia and Danny welcomed their twins Phinnaeus and Hazel into the world. During her pregnancy with the twins a few months earlier, Julia had jetted off to Lake Como, Italy to costar in Ocean’s 12 with George Clooney.
Julia described on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert how everyone was so protective of her while she was filming in Italy. “They just wanted to dress me in cotton balls and usher me. It was really, really charming.” After the twins were born, Julia remarked on their names. On The Late Show with David Letterman, she said, “Hazel is an old-fashioned name, and she’s strong, perfect Hazel.” On Live with Regis and Kelly, she said of Phinnaeus, “My husband wanted to name him Finn, which I quite liked, but it seemed like a nickname so I said we had to have a proper name, and then we can call him Finn.”
In June 2007, their third child, Henry Daniel was born. Julia told Oprah in 2010 that when Henry Daniel tells her at 5:30 in the morning that “it’s a beautiful day, mama,” it “makes 5:30 a whole lot prettier.”
Julia’s and Danny’s union is pretty special. In 2018, she said on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast: “Getting married to Danny. That was the first – my life will never be the same in the most incredible, indescribable way. The best decision I ever made in my entire life was to hitch my wagon to Danny Moder.”
In September 2022, Julia wore a meaningful Alexander McQueen gown to the world premiere of Ticket to Paradise in London. On it were emblazoned the initials of Danny Moder with their wedding date, and her three children’s initials with their birth dates.
On CBS Sunday Morning, Julia said, “I have the first letter Danny ever wrote me. One day I’ll show it to Hazel and say, ‘That’s what you’re looking for.’”
Julia’s priorities are clear. She went on to say on both CBS and the Today show, “The life that I’ve built with my husband. The life that we’ve built with our children. That’s the best stuff. It all starts with Danny Moder. He is our person and, in the most beautiful way, the captain of our ship.”
Julia’s values are steeped in the stuff that really matters, and her Instagram posts say it all. She describes herself – not as a Hollywood A-list actress – but simply ‘HUMAN’. She rescues dogs. She also recently posted this picture on IG of she and Danny with the caption: Happy Birthday to this amazing man who lights up our world.
